The .brand and .bank Top Level Domain Issue

Almost every sector of our economies is relying on the Internet, which has become over recent years a vital commodity.

Users and services providers have high expectations and are pushing for constant improvements of the underlying “mechanisms”. Recent developments that are particularly noteworthy are the migration to a new IP protocol allowing to interconnect an ever increasing number of human beings and machines and, of course, the decision taken by ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - to increase dramatically the number and possibilities of Internet domain issues.

In the future, internet address names may end with almost any word in any language, offering organisations around the world the opportunity to market their brand, products, community or cause in new and innovative ways.

ICANN also intends to allow the registration of generic names like “.bank”. The underlying application process is to start on 12 January and will end on 12 April 2012.

Naturally, the Luxembourg financial sector will be impacted by these changes and new opportunities may arise. During a conference organised by ABBL Jean-Paul Zens (Media and Communication Service of the Ministry of State), Olof Nordling (ICANN, Brussels), Craig Schwartz (BTS/The Financial Roundtable), Davig Hagen (CSSF) and Jean-Louis Schiltz (Schiltz & Schiltz) and Balazs Majoros (Deloitte) presented and discussed the administrative, technical, commercial and legal aspects of this new Internet landscape.
