On 9 February 2012, Michel Barnier welcomed the work done by the major EU Institutions that have finally reached an agreement on the contested EMIR proposal. This would mark the entry of a new actor in the legislative process: Indeed, ESMA will now be required to prepare with the EU Commission secondary level legislation.

On 18 January 2012, the European Parliament elected its president for the second half of this assembly's mandate. Together with the new president, 14 vice-presidents were also elected as well as 5 quaestors, amongst whom Luxembourg MEP Astrid Lulling was reelected.
According to the latest study on the impact of the financial centre on the Luxembourg economy, the direct and and indirect added value of the financial sector increased by 19% in 2010. The financial sector and related activities thus represent 38% of Luxembourg's gross domestic product.

Over 160 people attended the conference "Private Banking 2020" organized by the ABBL’s Private Banking Group, Luxembourg (PBGL) on 8 December 2011. Today, it has become pretty much an accepted truth that banks are guilty and that they should pay. Yet very few people actually lose much sleep thinking about what it is that banks are supposed to be guilty of and why they should pay. These days, simply saying that it is the fault of banks is more often than not enough to convince people of the truth of one’s argument. The extent to which personal opinion, loudly expressed, trumps over truth is easily illustrated by the ongoing Euro crisis.
