The European Commission appoints Expert Group on Sustainable finance

ABBL Published 15.06.2018

This week, the European Commission has published the list of members who will participate in the technical expert group on Sustainable finance.

This expert group which was announced in the Commission’s Action Plan on Sustainable finance adopted in March 2018, will advise the European Commission on:

  • an EU classification system (taxonomy) for environmentally sustainable activities,
  • the creation of an EU Green bond standard,
  • category of “low carbon” indices for use by asset and portfolio managers as a benchmark for a low carbon investment strategy,
  • metrics allowing improving disclosure on climate-related information.

The Expert Group , which will start meeting in July 2018 will have to work swiftly as the European Commission intends to adopt follow up measures to its Sustainable finance May package, by the end of this year.

Its mandate will run until 30 June 2019, with possible extension until the end of 2019.

The Expert group is composed of 35 members from civil society, academia, business and the finance sector.  It is interesting to the note that Jane Wilkinson from the Bourse du Luxembourg has been selected for this expert group. She is also providing her expertise to the working group on Sustainable finance set up by the ABBL earlier this year.
