UIA (International Association of Lawyers) is the global and multi-cultural organisation for the legal profession. It organizes an annual congress bringing together lawyers and legal professionnals from around the world for three days of working sessions and socialising.

Luxembourg City has been chosen to host the 63rd congress from November 6 to 10, 2019. It is the fourth time Luxembourg is host to a UIA congress for which more than a thousand participants from more than 80 countries are expected.


This year, on an exceptional basis, the UIA will open the congress to  members of the public living in Luxembourg at a special registration fee of 350 euros.  
This offer allows you to attend the following working sessions:
– Main Theme 1 – Innovation and the Law
This theme will cover innovation and the law in financial and legal services, as well as in space law. The session will be introduced by the Finance Minister of Luxembourg, Pierre Gramegna.

– Main Theme 2 – Business and Human Rights
An international panel of leading experts will accompany Dante Pesce, a member of the United Nations Working Group on – Business and Human Rights, who contributed to the elaboration of the UN Guiding Principles; and Max Schrems, the activist who took on Facebook in the European Court of Justice.

• European Law and Institutions

In presence of Viviane Reding, former Vice President of the European Commission, and members of the European Court of Justice and the European Commission to discuss upon the controls exercised by the European law and institutions, in particular in the field of competition law.

• Violence against Women

A special session will be dedicated to violence against women, to seek solutions to fight this widespread issue, and to reflect on the roles lawyers, bars and judges can play. This will be an opportunity for Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg to publicise “Stand Speak Rise up”, her initiative to combat conflict-related sexual violence.

Interactive workshop artificial intelligence challenges and the practice of law 

Mme Clementina Barbaro from the Council of Europe will intervene on the European Ethical Charter on the use of AI in judicial systems.
Once potential tools have been presented the societal consequences associated with artificial intelligence will be debated. This presentation will be followed by a debate on practical tort case involving AI. A panel of lawyers , judges, law professors, editors and journalists will take part in the discussion.
