Published on 03 March 2026

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote careers in Luxembourg’s financial sector, the ABBL Depositary Banking Cluster (DBCL) recently engaged with students from the Master in Finance & Economics at the University of Luxembourg. During the session, representatives from the cluster presented the role of depositary banks within the investment fund ecosystem, with a particular focus on both traditional and alternative investment funds. Students were introduced to the core responsibilities of depositary banks, including: asset safekeeping cash flow monitoring oversight of fund operations The discussion also explored the specific challenges associated with alternative investment funds, such as private equity, real estate, private debt and infrastructure, highlighting the strategic role depositary banks play in safeguarding investor interests.

Summary

A particularly interactive and practical session

What made the session especially valuable was the high level of interaction with the students and the practical approach taken by the speakers.

To illustrate the profession, the discussion included a “case study: a day in the life of a depositary”, offering students a concrete view of how depositary banks operate in practice. The example walked through the typical responsibilities professionals handle throughout the day, from asset oversight and operational checks to interactions with fund managers and other market participants.

This approach helped students better understand how depositary banking functions beyond theory, and how it connects to the broader investment fund ecosystem.

Participants also asked very concrete and candid questions about the reality of the job, including:

    • day-to-day responsibilities
    • career development opportunities
    • the variety of professional paths within the sector

For the professionals involved, this open exchange provided an opportunity to better understand the expectations of the next generation while sharing a transparent and realistic perspective on the opportunities and challenges of the profession.

A diverse range of career opportunities

Depositary banking offers a wide range of career paths that often remain under the radar for students. These include roles in operations, legal, risk management, compliance, technology and client services, all closely connected to the continued development of Luxembourg’s fund industry.

Through initiatives such as this exchange with the University of Luxembourg, the ABBL and its members aim to strengthen the connection between academia and the financial sector, helping students gain a clearer understanding of the professions that support Luxembourg’s position as a leading global fund centre.

The ABBL thanks the participating experts from the Depositary Banking Cluster and the University of Luxembourg for the open and engaging discussion.
