A new chapter for Luxembourg: Grand Duke Guillaume ascends the throne
Published on 02 October 2025
Today, Luxembourg enters a new era. After twenty-five years of dedicated service, His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri has formally abdicated, entrusting the crown to his son, Guillaume, who has been sworn in as the nation’s new Head of State.
Summary
This historic transition reflects Luxembourg’s longstanding tradition of peaceful abdications, ensuring both continuity and renewal. It is the third such solemn moment in modern history, following the abdications of Grand Duchess Charlotte in 1964 and Grand Duke Jean in 2000. Each time, the process has reaffirmed the strength of Luxembourg’s institutions and its capacity to combine stability with modernity.
As Grand Duke Guillaume begins his reign, he embodies the confidence of the Luxembourg people and the values of service, responsibility, and openness. Together with Grand Duchess Stéphanie, he brings a spirit of renewal while remaining faithful to the principles that have long guided the Grand Ducal family.
On this day of celebration and unity, the ABBL joins the nation in paying tribute to Grand Duke Henri for his decades of unwavering commitment to Luxembourg. At the same time, we extend our heartfelt wishes of success to Grand Duke Guillaume as he takes on his new responsibilities.
May this new chapter strengthen Luxembourg’s stability, prosperity, and place within Europe and the wider world.
