Interview: Spuerkeess and Greenomy on Bank-FinTech collaboration

Published on 28 January 2025

The 3rd edition of the ABBL Bank CEOs – FinTechs Speed Meeting event, held on 20 January 2025, brought together banking leaders and FinTech innovators for an evening of dynamic exchanges and new opportunities. Among the participants, Françoise Thoma, CEO of Spuerkeess, and François-Guillaume de Liechtervelde, Chief of Staff at Greenomy, shared their perspectives on the event and the evolving relationship between banks and FinTechs.

Summary

A valuable initiative for Luxembourg’s financial sector

Reflecting on her first experience at the event, Françoise Thoma expressed her enthusiasm:

“I was very impressed. It was my first time attending, and I think it was a great decision to be here tonight. The quality of the presentations, the variety of participants, and the genuine interest from CEOs and senior banking executives in FinTechs stood out. Banks and FinTechs have become real partners, and this event was a well-organised meeting of the ecosystem, which is crucial for Luxembourg’s financial sector today.”

She also highlighted how the perception of FinTechs has evolved over time:

“In the past, FinTech was somewhat abstract—no one really knew what these firms were doing. Today, their offerings are highly practical and can be seamlessly integrated into banking operations. FinTech solutions are flexible, allowing banks to select the right tools and enhance their business models. It is no longer about exploring concepts but about implementing concrete solutions.”

    From conversations to concrete partnerships

For Spuerkeess, the event was not just about networking but about identifying potential collaborations:

“We participated in one-on-one meetings with various FinTechs, taking notes on those that align with our needs. As a bank, we cannot develop everything internally, so selecting the right partners is essential. Thanks to my knowledgeable colleagues, we can identify the FinTechs that truly complement our services. In the coming days, we will follow up with some of the firms we met and hopefully develop concrete projects together.”

    Bridging two different worlds

Discussing ABBL’s role in fostering these connections, François-Guillaume de Liechtervelde praised the initiative:

“Banks and FinTech startups operate in very different worlds. Events like this act as icebreakers, making collaborations possible that might never have happened otherwise. From my perspective, this was a great success—not only for those who attended but for the financial ecosystem as a whole.”

He also shared a personal highlight from the event:

“One pleasant surprise was seeing one of our clients, Banque de Patrimoines Privés, deliver a testimonial about our collaboration. We didn’t expect it, and it was a great moment that also served as an icebreaker in the speed meetings that followed.”

    Looking ahead

As the financial sector continues to evolve, structured collaboration between banks and FinTechs will remain a key driver of innovation. Françoise Thoma and François-Guillaume de Liechtervelde’s insights illustrate the event’s impact—not just as a networking opportunity, but as a catalyst for meaningful partnerships.
