Extension of Hotline 49 10 10 services: Anti-fraud services now available 24/7
Published on 02 January 2024
The ABBL and financial institutions expand Hotline 49 10 10 to provide 24/7 support for clients reporting fraud, blocking cards and suspending LuxTrust certificates.
Summary
In response to the dangers posed by financial fraud, several Luxembourgish financial institutions are partnering with Worldline and LuxTrust to expand the services of Hotline 49 10 10. Their clients will now be able to call the hotline in case of fraud outside regular business hours.
Multiplication and sophistication of fraud attempts
Phishing, smishing, vishing, as well as theft or copying of credit/debit cards—financial fraud attempts are multiplying and becoming increasingly sophisticated. Luxembourgish financial institutions continue to invest heavily in their digital security measures and inform their clients about best practices for preventing fraud risks. Nevertheless, no one is entirely immune to such misfortunes. In fact, in most successful attempts, it is observed that the victims themselves have disclosed their credentials or security codes to the fraudsters.
More security 24/7
To allow clients to respond to any fraud or suspicion of fraudulent transactions, even outside their bank’s business hours, the ABBL’s Phishing Prevention Task Force, which includes several Luxembourgish banks, has collaborated with Worldline and LuxTrust to expand the services of Hotline 49 10 10. Worldline is the global leader in payment and transaction security, while LuxTrust provides electronic identity management services through strong authentication of individuals.
In practice, during business hours, clients can call their bank or LuxTrust to report fraud. Outside these hours, in the evenings and on weekends, calls will either be automatically transferred to Worldline’s emergency number, 49 10 10, or clients will be prompted to contact 49 10 10 themselves. The hotline will be accessible 24/7.
A procedure has been implemented to:
- Clarify the circumstances of the fraud with the client.
- Block bank cards.
- Establish contact with LuxTrust to suspend or revoke certificates.
- Inform the client’s bank of the incident.
In a second phase, this service may be extended to account blocking.
The following institutions are participating in this initiative:
- Banque de Luxembourg
- Banque Internationale à Luxembourg
- Banque Raiffeisen
- BGL BNP Paribas
- POST Luxembourg
- Spuerkeess.
