Introduction of a new universal payment slip (TUP) from 2 June 2025
Published on 23 March 2025
The ABBL and its members, with the active support of Victor Buck Services, are introducing a new version of the universal payment slip (Titre Universel de Paiement – TUP), effective from 2 June 2025.
Summary
Still 1.2 million TUP transfer orders every year
Despite the rise of digital banking, Luxembourg still sees around 1.2 million TUP-based transfer orders annually. Whether it is companies receiving invoice payments, associations collecting donations, or individuals transferring funds to friends and family, these transactions require reliable and secure banking infrastructure.
While the vast majority of transfers now occur through cards, direct debits or digital credit transfers, many people still rely on the TUP for its simplicity. Pre-filled data and a familiar format make it a preferred option, particularly for those less comfortable with online banking.
A more efficient process with better-structured data
To improve the processing of TUP-based payments, ABBL member banks and payment service providers (PSPs), together with Victor Buck Services, have modernised the TUP slip. The updated format features better-structured data, enabling more secure and efficient processing.
Starting 9 October 2025, users will also have the option to indicate whether their transaction should be treated as an instant payment, depending on their bank’s capabilities.
Key dates to remember
- From 2 June 2025: The new ISO 20022-compliant TUP slips will be introduced and used alongside the current formats (1 & 2).
- From 2 June 2025: The short version (3) will no longer be supported.
- From 1 January 2026: Only the new TUP format (1) will be accepted.
What you need to do
- Retail clients will automatically receive the new TUP slips from their bank or payment service provider.
- Corporate clients, public institutions and organisations should contact their printer or download the specifications and production guidelines from the ABBL website.
