Published on 23 April 2024

The European Money Week 2024, coordinated in Luxembourg by the ABBL Foundation for Financial Education, empowers young people through financial literacy initiatives, including the European Money Quiz, to build stronger financial knowledge for the future.

Summary

The European Money Week, initiated by the European Banking Federation in 2017, is an annual event dedicated to raising young people’s awareness of financial literacy. The week-long initiative features a variety of activities and events across Europe, all aimed at equipping young people with essential financial skills and knowledge. It serves as a platform for schools, financial institutions and other stakeholders to come together and promote financial education, thereby fostering a financially responsible future generation.

    Luxembourg’s outstanding performance

In a fascinating demonstration of financial acuity, young minds from across Europe came together on 19 April for the European Money Quiz. A special tip of the hat to Eleonore and Paul from LRSL Lycée Robert-Schuman Luxembourg for their great performance! Although they just missed out on the podium, their excellent performance is truly commendable. Many thanks to Mireille Lux, Françoise Thomé and Tom Colombo for guiding them along the way.

A record number of participants, reflecting the growing importance of financial education

This year saw an unprecedented level of participation: some 36,000 teenagers from 2,200 European schools took part in the national competitions. Initiated by the European Banking Federation in 2017, the event aims to equip young people with crucial financial knowledge, paving the way for a financially responsible future generation. In Luxembourg, the ABBL Foundation for Financial Education is taking the lead in coordinating this inspiring initiative.

The enthusiasm shown by over 1,000 schools taking part in the national competitions is testament to the growing importance attached to financial education and the eagerness of young people to build a solid financial foundation.

A pan-European test of financial knowledge

The quiz challenged participants on key financial topics suitable for teenagers, such as long-term planning, savings strategies, understanding cryptocurrencies, cybersecurity awareness and responsible credit management. With questions aligned to the OECD/INFE guidelines for financial literacy education, the competition truly tested participants’ financial know-how. In total, 26 countries, including Luxembourg, showcased their talents, underlining the importance of financial education across Europe.

The event also featured some exciting activities, including visits to Wikifin Lab and Euronext, which gave participants valuable insights into the world of finance.

As we celebrate the success of this year’s European Money Week, we look forward to continuing our efforts to promote financial education and empower young people to make informed financial decisions.
