The ABBL at the SCynergy event: exploring the power of AI and advanced computing in finance

On 28 April 2025, the ABBL took part in the SCynergy Super Computing Luxembourg event at the Chambre de Commerce, co-organised by LuxProvide, Luxinnovation, and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT).

Summary

    From technical potential to practical implementation

    The panel featured:

    • Anne Goujon, Head of Data Science Laboratory at BGL BNP Paribas
    • Alexandre Hotton, Lead Data Scientist at FOYER
    • Yannick Huchard, Chief Technology Officer at BIL
    • Simon Riffault, Securities and Payment Systems Oversight at the BCL

    Together, they explored how AI, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and quantum technologies are being implemented to address growing industry needs — from handling increasing volumes of data and managing risks in real-time to navigating complex regulatory environments and combating financial crime.

    The financial sector faces pressures from increasing data volumes, real-time risk management, regulatory complexity, and constant threats of financial crime. Yet these challenges are also opportunities where advanced technologies can redefine how financial institutions operate, innovate, and serve society.

    Innovation through collaboration and human-centric values

    Beyond technical progress, the panel stressed that real impact comes from responsible application: through collaboration across institutions, support from public stakeholders, and a focus on organisational culture. The discussion also touched on:

    • Real-world use cases and maturity of adoption within Luxembourg institutions
    • Challenges related to trust, transparency and explainability in AI systems
    • The role of HR and culture in building confidence around AI adoption
    • The importance of national-level support to foster innovation
