Exploring the future of digital identity

Published on 11 March 2025

On 11 March 2025, the ABBL held its first conference dedicated to digital identity at the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce. The event brought together key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to discuss the evolving landscape of digital identity, including its regulatory framework, main challenges and future applications.

Summary

    Regulatory framework and Luxembourg’s role

Lionel Antunes (CTIE) provided valuable insights into the legal framework of eIDAS v2, Luxembourg’s national approach to digital identity, and the interoperability of digital wallets across Europe.

Marc Pauly (Ministry for Digitalisation) highlighted Luxembourg’s participation in the POTENTIAL consortium, sharing lessons learned, the current state of play, and the next steps foreseen for the project.

Pilot project on digital identity wallets

A key part of the conference focused on the ongoing pilot project testing the use of digital identity wallets for bank account openings. Christophe Medinger (Spuerkeess) and Lionel Antunes presented the project’s objectives to improve security and efficiency for financial institutions. They also outlined potential future uses, including online banking authentication and qualified electronic signatures.

Panel discussion on adoption challenges and global trends

The event featured a panel discussion with Prof. Gilbert Fridgen (University of Luxembourg), Pierre Grasset (LuxTrust), and Vincent Sigliano (Worldline). The panel explored the adoption challenges of the EU digital identity wallet, regulatory changes under eIDAS v2, and their implications for trust services and payments.

Speakers also examined global trends in digital identity, comparing the EU approach to those in other regions, and shared lessons from successful implementations. The discussion addressed the need for standardisation and regulatory adaptation to enable widespread adoption of digital identity solutions.

    Closing and outlook

The conference concluded with an engaging Q&A session, allowing participants to gain deeper insights from the speakers, followed by networking opportunities.

With the rapid evolution of digital identity frameworks, the event reaffirmed Luxembourg’s commitment to innovation and the development of secure, interoperable digital solutions for the future.
