LuxTrust announces the end of the use of the Token for enhanced security

Published on 29 May 2024

LuxTrust is replacing its traditional Token with the LuxTrust Mobile application to enhance digital security, improve transaction authentication, and provide users with a safer solution against evolving cybersecurity threats.

Summary

As announced in a LuxTrust press release on 27 May 2024, the company has confirmed that it will cease to use the Token by 31 December 2024. This decision underlines LuxTrust’s commitment to strengthening the security of online transactions and adapting to evolving technological challenges.

    A milestone in digital security

Introduced in 2008, the LuxTrust Token is an integral part of securing online transactions in Luxembourg. However, with the rapid evolution of cybersecurity threats, more sophisticated solutions are required. LuxTrust has recognised the need to move from tokens to more advanced security measures to better protect against today’s online risks.

This transition underlines LuxTrust’s commitment to state-of-the-art security for its users. The focus will now be on the LuxTrust Mobile application as the primary tool for digital identity verification and transaction authentication. This change is aimed at complying with regulatory standards and meeting users’ heightened security expectations.

    LuxTrust Mobile: the enhanced solution

The LuxTrust Mobile application offers greater security than the traditional token. It allows users to view transaction details, such as amount, recipient and merchant information, directly on their smartphone. This extra layer of verification enhances user security by providing an additional check before any transaction is finalised.

The main benefits of the LuxTrust Mobile application are as follows:

    • Convenience: Transactions can be confirmed directly from a smartphone, eliminating the need for a physical token.
    • Universal access: The application can be used on smartphones, tablets or computers, providing seamless connectivity.
    • Easy activation: Users can activate the application using an existing active token, ensuring a smooth transition.

For users who do not have a smartphone, LuxTrust offers the LuxTrust Scan, a physical device that provides similar security features by displaying transaction details for verification purposes.

    Transition support and guidelines

After 31 December 2024, Tokens will no longer be valid for authentication or confirmation of transactions on banking and government platforms. Users are encouraged to switch to the LuxTrust Mobile application well in advance of this date. LuxTrust provides detailed guides and dedicated support by phone (+352 24 550 550), email (questions@luxtrust.lu), and in-person assistance at its offices Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

Commitment to digital inclusion and accountability

LuxTrust is committed to digital inclusion. From September, the company will launch the Inclusion Delivery programme, working with associations and municipalities to help users with specific needs. This initiative aims to provide tailored information and support to help users make the transition from the token.

In addition, LuxTrust is working to make the LuxTrust Mobile application more accessible, in accordance with the law of 8 March 2023 on accessibility requirements for products and services.

To promote environmental responsibility, LuxTrust is preparing a token collection and recycling programme, offering users a responsible way to dispose of their tokens once they are no longer in use.

This major update of LuxTrust marks a crucial step in improving the security of digital transactions in Luxembourg. The ABBL urges all its members to prepare for a smooth transition to the more secure LuxTrust Mobile application. It is crucial to stay ahead of emerging threats and ensure the continued protection of users’ digital identities.
